DAYTONA BEACH — Ocean Center officials expected the Parachute Industry Association’s biennial International Symposium here this week to draw approximately 600 people. The event, which began Monday and runs through Friday, wound up attracting nearly twice that amount.
The estimated 1,100 attendees includes manufacturers and suppliers of parachute-related equipment from throughout the world, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Italy, Russia, South Africa and India.
“It’s good attendance for us,” said Donald Poor, director of the Volusia County-run beachside convention center.
“We’re here to promote our industry and do exactly what our organization’s bylaws state — to disseminate and share information on parachuting safety and continued education,” said Cliff Schmucker, president of the Skokie, Ill.-based Parachute Industry Association.
